The weakness of this year's Big Brother figures highlights how Channel 4 is going through what its property experts would describe as a 'correction' - so what better time to apply to run it's main rival, BBC2. The controller's job appeared in the press this week - no mention of Channel 4, or BBC1 for that matter, although co-operation with BBC4 is required.
In my column this week I list eight ideas for anyone preparing their application for the job. Here they are in brief -
1. Does BBC2 need to try so hard for ratings, since it is ahead of C4's primetime share already.
2. Send ratings grabbers like Top Gear to BBC1 - likewise Dragon's Den.
3. Clear out the kitchen - BBC2 depends too much on cookery for ratings.
4. Respond to Channel 4's documentary challenge.
5. Trim Newsnight to 30 minutes - open up a new documentary slot at 11pm for indies.
6. Revitalise arts coverage - put the Culture Show out to tender.
7. Identify new drama.
8. Behave more like a PSB channel - otherwise C4 will win a slice of the licence fee by promising more PSB content.

Go on then, how would you like The Culture Show to change?
One of my other proposals -drop Newsnight Review - would enable Culture Show to introduce more debate. This should be designed to involve viewers in setting the editorial agenda. Ideally this could be linked to a separate culture, arts and media feedback show on BBC4.
